eurovision3000 report is now available for print on demand. At the previous BNO Tallks we launched the eurovision3000 report. The report is now available for € 30,00. To order an example, please send us a 'print-on-demand' mail with the amount, your name and address.

The publication exists of two parts; the process and outcomes of the project. The content and lay-out give a transparent insight in the working methodology, attitude and the learning process of the initiators. The outcomes give a platform for all the voices we collected.

eurovision3000 is a self initiated project by Anja Groten and Janneke de Rooij. We're two graphic designers, and our aim is to get many voices to get as close as possible to an authentic view on the European identity.

"We went onto the streets and there discussed European identity in public spaces and explored graphic design as a research tool. eurovision3000 stands for a design process which does not exclude the question whether there is an actual need for one European identity. Does creating an identity for Europe mean creating a constructed surface for something that should develop naturally? Should we look only at the past, the history and the heritage when we talk about a definition of European identity? What is the difference between the inside- and the outside view on Europe? Initiating, for example, a logo competition or a competition for a preamble seems inadequate. It appears hard to reach one authentic and true image on Europe or the European Union."

Workshop: What needs to be said about the European Union? During 'The Next Big Thing' by the design department of the Sandberg Instituut Amsterdam.

spandoek, eurovision3000

We went to track down the European Union in the surrounding of The Flemish Arts Centre 'De Brakke Grond' in Amsterdam. By walking along the geographical border of the EU in a very small scale.. or by talking to several EU members on the street.. or by tracking European prostitutes.. or by collecting EU regulated food...

Easter market Amsterdam, self-made flyers of statements by the visitors.

Paasmarkt, Westerparkt, eurovision3000 After the exhibition we created a platform to collect reactions from as many people as possible to start a discussion rather than one vision. The eastern market in Amsterdam was the perfect location to reach a broad target group. All kinds of people came to read the previous flyers and reacted on our discussion by making their own flyer for on our stand.

Gallery Lev Kaupas Amsterdam, a discussion on the definition of a European identity.

Lev Kaupas, prikbord, adds, eurovision3000

Right now we are working on a self initiated project about the discussion whether Europe needs an identity and what the role of a designer is in this discussion. Does creating an identity for Europe mean creating a fake surface for something that should develop naturally? Should we look only at the past, the history and the heritage when we talk about a definition of European identity? What is the difference between the inside- and the outside view on Europe? Those are some of the questions that we are posing ourselves and that we would like to discuss with an European audience. The first visual part of our research is a notice board which shows home-made advertisements made by people from different layers in society. We used this public podium as an methaphor for the society looking for an European identity. The contents of the announcements are generated through the Google translator, creating an European language.

Poster series: Self generated EU maps for sale.

eurovision3000, poster serie eurovision3000, poster serie eurovision3000, poster serie

We created a poster series of 3 posters that show 3 different self generated EU maps. We looked for each of the 27 members of the European Union on page 27 of the Google image search. Afterwards we placed the photo’s in original image proportion on the geographic spots of the countries on the European map. Herewith we’re creating a new European narrative. In our map, countries become bigger because their Google images are bigger. You see 3 image choices of dutch, English and German Google image search. In the second layer, three different statements are posing the question whether a designer is able to create authenticity in European identity matters.

Typeradio discussion

typeradio, eurovision3000

Based on the lecture of Josef Mrozek, the students of the Sandberg Instituut organized a discussion on European identity. Mrozek tries to define Europe and the Design of Europe with looking at it´s traditions. We were wondering if it´s a good choice to define europe through it´s past/history/heritage. Is there a way of giving it an identity which is focused on the present time and is there necessarily a need to define it anyway? This discussion was the starting point of eurovision3000.
